"Got any disputes over a will? Then Kate is your lady!" Our speaker in March was Kate Chandler, solicitor and partner at Greene & Greene. She asked, "What if a will comes as a shock?" and held us spellbound as she led us through the intricacies of making a will. 20130314There is no register of wills in England so it is advisable to make sure that someone – perhaps your executor – know where your will is held. If one cannot be found it may be assumed that you have not made one! 50% of people don't make a will and have no say in the distribution of their estate or in who will administer it. Kate advised being very careful writing a will oneself and to try to resolve disputes around the table or with a mediator as court cases can be very expensive. Wills can be found invalid and challenged. Was it written 'under influence' or by someone in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease? Kate warned, "Don't be upset if you are 'of a certain age' and your solicitor asks you to see a doctor." After this most interesting talk and several questions from members, refreshments were served. Many thanks to the hostesses, Lesley, Jennifer, Kay and Muriel for their delicious cakes and biscuits.
