Pakenham WI News - December 2012 / January 2013

Pakenham WI

We, the Pakenham W.I., are so pleased that, starting in February, a newsletter is now to be delivered to every household in the village. It enables us to reach all the ladies of the village who may have wondered about us, and what goes on in this ever growing women's organisation. I hope that by being able to read each month what we have been up to and what we are planning, you may be tempted to come an give us a try.

Back in September we held a Race Night in the village hall and raised valuable funds for both our institute and for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Our evening began with a presentation of a cheque for £300, received with thanks by one of their staff, Catherine Shepherd. We then enjoyed a splendid meal prepared and served by Andrea Davey and her team. The quality, quantity and excellent service never fail to impress. We had our own quiz, to keep us busy between courses, guessing names of sweets and chocolates from cryptic clues. When the mince pies and coffee arrived we were entertained by Sarah on her accordion. This time a musical quiz, when we tried to identify tunes and composers. All rather quaint but charming. Secret Santa and a splendid raffle rounded off a great evening.

New Year's greetings to all and faithful members paid their subs for another year of fellowship and friendship. We welcomed a new member Theresa Colthorpe who, although she lives in Thurston, comes, with friends, to our W.I.

Celia StevensCelia Stevens WatchOur speaker was Celia Stevens, who wowed us with her enthusiasm for all things Motor Racing. Her obvious love for this sport was infectious. She sang the praises at how the chaps, recognising her considerable talent, have made her welcome in this male dominated activity. Stories of famous tracks she has raced on, for example Brands Hatch, Goodwood and Silverstone. Her driving highlight though was to drive in the 24hour Le Mans race and to finish as well. A grand and rare wrist watch was a 'trophy' she proudly showed us.

The members then watched a DVD showing photos from the activities and meetings our members have shared during 2012. All set to music with cheeky comments on many of the images. Thank you Tracy Martin you're a star! Truly scrumptious cakes and biscuits from Lynda, Barbara, Bridget and Joyce. Thank you ladies.

How many of us. I wonder, have little bags with broken beads in, that we don't know how to fix but can't bear to part with? Our speaker this month, Celia Simms, will hopefully give us some ideas and enable us to give these little treasures a new lease of life. Bring along your broken jewels for her advice and be inspired.

Our first competition of the year is to make a piece of jewellery "Good Enough to Eat". Quite literally, let your imagination go wild. Points won will count towards the 'in house' cup. Got to be in it to win it!

Do please come along if you think the W.I. might be for you. You will be made most welcome. There's no charge, even tea and cake is free to guests!
