Pakenham WI News - July 2011

Pakenham WI

June 14th 2011 - Key stage / Diamond Jubilee Meeting.
This was the second meeting to discuss the plans for a Diamond Jubilee celebration to portray Pakenham's role in World War 2 producing a play/pageant with Heritage Lottery Funding.
We were joined by representatives of both Norton and Ixworth Middle School as this will be a project aimed at sharing Pakenham's rich heritage with the younger generation. It was especially nice for me to meet Martin and Ann Harrison who have a wealth of vital information to contribute to the plan. We also hope to organise a big street party and dance to ensure a day to remember for all ages.

June 15th 2011 - Trip to see Strictly Gershwin.
Sixteen members left Pakenham at 2.30pm to see The Strictly Gershwin concert in The Royal Albert Hall. After supper on Kensington High Street we took our rather high up and extremely hot seats in The Albert Hall. The concert of ballet and symphony music was sheer magic. Adrian our driver had the coach parked right outside the hall door. Although the late night London traffic delayed our journey home, I can really recommend this civilised and economical way to visit London's theatre land.

June 26th 2011 - National Gardens Open.
The team served non-stop cream teas for the N.G.O. event at Squires Gate. The teas were delicious, the company great and the weather exceptional. We were delighted to make a contribution to this charity event which raised over £500.00 from the 3 participating gardens Pelambech, Fen House and Squires Gate. Thank you team as always you were fantastic.

July 14th 2011 - Annual Garden Party Meeting.
This was supposed to be a picnic on the playing fields but Pakenham W.I.'s track record of outside evening events is not good. This year was no exception - after a dismal day of cold, rain and dreary skies we made the decision at lunch time to adjourn to the village hall. With pretty tables round a camp fire !!! we all enjoyed the evening. Each member provided a different finger food dish, Marion purchased an excellent range of wine and Carole and Julie organised two excellent fun packed quizzes so a good warm and dry evening was had by all. Next year we will plan for an interior function and then who knows it may be a fine dry night.!!!!

July 30th 2011 - Summer Fete.
The catering team will be running a non-stop food outlet in the sports field pavilion. We shall be selling a wide range of our now internationally famous cakes, plus a trading and card stall. Three members of our team have organised races and a competition of ' Make a minature garden ' for children. This is an excellent example of village team work when we join forces to provide a good day for all.

August 2nd 2011 - Trip to Althorp.
16 members are Northampton bound to visit Diana's home and burial place. I have visited before and can highly recommend this beautiful family home. Diana's clothes and journals are all on display but the highly Professional way in which this house and gardens are opened to the public for just 2 months a year is superb and very very emotional. This coach leaves P.V.H. at 8.30 am.

August 11th 2011 - Dr John Cannon : Cardio vascular disease.
John, our well known and popular G.P. is the guest speaker for the evening on this thought provoking subject on how we should be looking after our health.

We have been booked to serve refreshments at this Parish Plan Newsletter Meeting.

Forthcoming events:-

Nearly New Sale in Pakenham Village Hall on October 1st 2011. This sale is back by popular demand to sell a vast range of nearly new designer clothes and shoes to raise money for equipment for Nickys Way ( the childrens bereavement section ) at St Nicholas Hospice.

Think that is my lot for this month. Life is never dull at Pakenham W.I. !!! If you want to give us a try we are at the village hall on the second Thursday of every month at 7.30pm.
